AT

Welcome back to another exciting year at
the Webb! This was a year of change and steps
forward. Our school went from a college to a
full scale university. This was also the year of
one huge freshman class, the beginnings of a
lake, and a new and improved Lindsav build-
ing. The school of Divinity and more Grad-
uate programs were added. What more could
we Bulldogs ask for? We've got it all. we're
moving aheadll!

A Dream Come True

Students returned to school last fall to
Gardner-Webb College, but are leaving
this spring from Gardner-Webb Uni-
versity. The official name change
occurred on JanuaiA- I, 1993 and since
then students and faculty/staff have been
making the necessary changes to show
that we deserve the new title.

Along with our nrw title came the
addition of the Noel Hall. Lake Hol-
lifield. new masters programs and a
school of divinity. These additions com-
plement an already well establishfd grad-
uate program, led by Dr. Darlene
Gravett. Dr. Larry Gregg and Dr. Bob
Lamb will lead new programs in the di-
vinity school.

The leadership of Gardner-Webb
UXIVERSITY does not want this to be a
superficial change. Instead, it wants for
Gardner-Webb to realize its full poten-
tial. From a history that begins well be-
fore 1905. this high school — junior col-
lege — college — univei'sity has served it
community and students well. The future
should be as bright as the past, and this is
the dream come true.

Gardner- Webb celebrated "the ties that bind" at
Homecoming '92. Akimni and students enjoyed a
week-end full of activities that began with an alumni
dinner and concluded with the Homecoming dance.
Our football team came from behind and walked
away with a 34- 1 7 victory over Catawba. Lauren Lee
was crowned Homecoming Queen during the half-
time festivities with Lynn Roberts as her Senior
Attendant. Fran Mabery, Crystal Higgins and
Shannon Reese also served on her court of attend-
ants.

Curtis Gibbons

"Curt smiles at the slightest
provocation, making him a very
pleasant person to approach.
He has the first requirement of
an effective communicator, and
he works hard at the process!"
says Dr. Bill Stowe, Chair of the
Communications Department.
Curtis' most embarrassing mo-
ment at GWU was when he ran over a one-way sign in Shelby
because someone ran him off the road. "It seemed everyone
from the school passed by and saw my car." Curt hopes to be-
come a photographer or writer once he graduates from
Gardner-Webb University.

Curt has already served as photographer for a major fed-
eral agency and done an internship at a radio station.

His prospects for the future look good, and he looks for-
ward to his firstjob in the field. If determination has anything
to do with it, he will be quite successful.

not as shv as she used to be since
attending GW. Marlene plans
to go on to graduate school at
UNC-Charlotte to obtain her
masters. She hopes to find a job

Ben Moore

Ben is a Social Science major. His most embarrassing mo-
ment at GW is when he lost an entire fifteen page term paper
for Dr. Eastman on his word processor the morning it was
due. Ben then had to go to Dr. Eastman and face the music.

Ben is currently applying to law school and hopes to prac-
tice law back home in SC. According to Dr. Yelton, "Ben says
very little, but when he speaks, it is usually worth listening to
him. There is one thing that worries me about Ben; how does
an honest, soft spoken, intelligent man hope to become a suc-
cessful lawyer?"

"I have learned how to fit into the real adult world." Wendy

Aimee Stewart

Independent, friendly, ambi-

are just a few ways to describe
Aimee, or Aimeealoosa as she is
affectionately called by her
friends. She sees the biggest
change in herself is that she
came out of her room and she
has definitely come out! She has
been an active member of the Student Government Associa-
tion in the office of Student Entertainment Association chair-
person. "Aimee has been an outstanding SEA chair. Her high
energy and enthusiasm has given way to quality entertain-
ment. Aimee's secret is she likes to have fun," says Audrey
Sloan. She has also been a Big Sister, SNCAE — SNEA Presi-
dent, writer for the Pilot, and Senior Resident Advisor in
H.A.P.Y. Aimee was voted to the Who's Who Among Stu-
dents in American Universities and Colleges. Her Elemen-
tary Studies major is quite fitting for someone who is striving
to be a better person, because she will encourage her students
to do the same.

Karen Mauney

Karen has been very busy
at GWU with BSU, FCA,
F.O.C.U.S., SNCAE-SNEA,
and of course our own mas-
cot, Luki. Karen's cheerful
spirit and i<ind heart have
brightened many days for
those around her. She is one
of those people who never
sees a stranger. Karen is an Elementary studies major. Her
qualities will make her an excellent teacher. She plans to teach
in N.C. or S.C., after graduation. Karen says the best thing
that has happened to her during her years at GWU has been
meeting the Christian friends she has now. Karen says she will
always remember the teachers of the Education Department,
and those who are willing to help whatever the circumstances.

"Small service is true

Andrea says that the best thing that has happened to her at
GWU are the friendships and memories she has made. An-
drea has kept her.self busy with the Honors Program, Phi
Beta Lambda, SIFE, the World Trade Resource Club, the
Volleyball team, Intramurals, and the Institute of Manage-
ment Accountants. She was voted into the Who's Who
Among Students In American Universities and Colleges. She
will stand out among CWU's athletes as the first recipient of
the SAC First Union Scholar Athlete Award. An Accounting
major, Andrea plans to be a CPA.

Jason Tyler Crook

Jason says that the thing he
will remember most about
GWU is "without a doubt the
people; we are fortunate to
have such a diverse student
body at this institution. I ha\e
made many life long friends in
mv vears here." He admits that
he has changed quite a bit since his ticshinanyear, "all toi the
better of course." Jason's leadership qualities, adorable smile,
great sense of fashion and most definitely his incredible
dance moves have made such an impression on people that he
w ill be one of the things manv of us will choose to remember
about GWU. Though the fields of filmmaking and exotic
dancing have been suggested, Jason plans to obtain an .\1B.A
with a concentration in marketing, after graduation.

Edward J. Faille Jr.

Ed, who always delivers, says he has grow ii up a lot
since his freshman year. "I feel older and ready to
jump into the real world." Ed has been a very in-
volved student leader here at CiWU. His activities in-
clude Student Senate, class President during his
junior and senior years. Judicial Appeals (Com-
mittee, President and Attache of the World Trade
Resource Center Club, Co-chair of the Special
Events in the Student Entertainment Association,
and has been placed in the Who's Who Among
American Universities and Colleges. An Industrial
Management major, Ed plans to attend graduate
school and become a
successful business-
man. His unpredict-
able and spontaneous
personality is one
thing that makes him
standout in the minds
of his friends.

Daniel Priddy

Daniel says his most embarrassing moment at GW
was "asking my now wife, Cathy Bratton, to dance
with me before I knew her and getting turned
down." Daniel admits that the biggest change that
has occurred in his life while attending GW is be-
coming inore dependent on himself, rather than
others. Daniel wants to be remembered as being a
strong Christian and hopefully making a difference
in someone else's life. He also wants everyone to
know that he has a better wiffle ball curve than Mark
Ackerman. After graduation, Daniel plans to get a
job at RJR Nabisco in Winston-Salem.

Harrison B. Dean

Harrison came to GWU as a transfer student
and cjuickly became an active member of our stu-
dent body. He serves as President of the Student
Alumni Council, Chairman of both the Senior
Campaign and the Student Involvement Commit-
tee, and on the publicity connnittee of the Transi-
tion Team. Harrison has been selected as a
member of the Who's Who Among American
Universities and Colleges. He also has pardci-
pated in the Intramurals program. "Gardner-
Webb and the people that keep it alive have taught
me a priceless lesson . . . leadership." A business
major, Harrison
plans to become ex-
tremely successful.

Abdul Asghar

"Eager to learn, outgoing in personality, in-
quisitive by nature, Abdul seems to be everywhere
on campus at once, " says Dr. Gravett. Abdul is an
accounting major who has been very involved at
GWU. He served as a Big Brother, a Resident
Advisor, President of the International Students
Club, a senator at large, and writer for the Pilot.
An interesting fact about Abdul, he speaks three
languages and reads two. He says the best thing
that has happened to him at GWU is the privilege
to have met the "best, most outstanding faculty of
all time." Abdul says he would like to be remem-
bered as "the debonair, cultivated, intellectual
foreigner who took
the campus by
storm."

Caroline's sister Kitty does not approve of the "tacky " dress her sister has chosen for the
wedding. 1

Mae-Ella tells Caroline of her own personal
views about men and their good and bad
qualities.

The Gardner-Webb Theatre
proudly presented "NUPTIALS"
by Judy Simpson Cook. They did an
outstanding job of describing how
much chaos one can encounter
while trying to plan a wedding. It
was both creative and entertaining
because of the way each person por-
trayed his or her character. The play
also caught an emotional side with
the realization of letting a loved one
grow up and get married.

The Theatre is directed by Mr.
John Brock. He has a strong back-
ground in drama through personal
experience with directing the Char-
lotte Theatre, Wake Forest Uni-
versity Theatre, Greater Shelby
Community Theatre, and many
other professional acting and direct-
ing jobs. One of Mr. Brock's stron-
gest desires is to set up a scholarship
fund to attract outstanding drama
students to the school.

The Gardner- Webb Theatre has
come a long way in a very short time.
Attendance has increased with over
6,000 people attending plays during

the 1991-92 season, and more than
150 people were involved in pro-
duction.

Other plays that were planned
later in the season include the fol-
lowing: "WIZARD OF OZ, FES-
TIVAL OF ONE- ACTS, and LION
IN THE WINTER." There was also
an AWARDS SHOW planned to an-
nounce those individuals who re-
ceived awards for the season to com-
mend them for excellence in their
roles.

Mark Sinclair explains his problems with

BULLDOG BITES

Ludre Kwasnik adds extra points to the
lOieboard with another field goal.

Sometimes the little wounds hurt the
longest, as the Fighting Bulldogs le-
minded their opponents this season.
Gardner-Webb, though a small uni-
versity from a small town, sunk its teeth
into every game, and the scoreboard
reflected it. With the exception of the
first and last games, these 'Dogs' won
every contest! They were at the top of
their game, leading the conference in
virtually every statistical category.

To have a big bite you must know
where to attack. For two hours every
day the players sharpened their teeth
in practices and training. They de-
veloped fast-scoring offense ("run and
shoot") and a rock-solid defense. Ac-
cording to junior defensive lineman
Todd Felkei, the main priority for this
year was to achieve team unity.

Both offense and defense have come
together this year. With talented fresh-
men and a pack of 15 seniors who have

honed their game to perfection, the
Bulldogs anticipate an even bigger bite
in the coming years.

The season ended in a national
championship game that slipped away
in the last 36 seconds. After fighting
hard and dominating the play, the
Bulldogs watched Central State
"fumble" its way into the endzone for
the winning score. The 5,000 fans were
stunned, silent in their disappoint-
ment, but they demonstrated their
admiration and respect for the team.
Coaches Fish, Anderton, Parker, Uns-
worth, and others who made the play-
off possible.

There is an anticipation of what is to
come for the following seasons. Sopho-
more linebacker Cory Headen advises
all Bulldog fans to "keep an eye out for
Gardner-Webb in the future. We're
going to get better. The team is young."

Gardner-Webb defense de-claws a Lees-
McRea Bobcat during the game played on

Hall of Fame Day. One of the many successful sweeps against

Central State.

The Ladies' Tennis Team started
the fall season off extremely well
with a 6-3 win over UNC-Asheville.
This was a big accomplishment, be-
cause UNC-Asheville is a Division 1
team. Then, the girls went on to play
Belmont Abbey and had another 6-
3 victory!

The team was led by returning
seniors. Dee Pollard and Shelley
Henderson. The coach of the
Ladies" Tennis Team is Brenda Hal-
ford. She stated, "My goal for the
season is to improve last years rec-
ord, and I feel confident that the
girls will achieve this."

Jennifer Bunton and Shelly Henderson
make a tough team for the doubles match.

Kings of
the Mat

From November to March. Bull-
dogs rule the mats. Wrestling — a
sport of skill, agility, and sheer de-
termintion — separates the kings
from the cowards. Gardner-Wet)b
was defmiielv considered rovaltv.

Wrestlers must have a great
amount of self-discipline to main-
tain their weight class for 5 months.
To do so thev lift weights, monitor
their diet, and run. Success is not
easv. But bv sweating through the
grueling practices and individual
training the Bulldogs reign. When
the anticipation of competing be-
came the satisfaction of winning.
Gardner-Webb wore the crown of
victory.

Coach Dick Wince takes much
pride in Bulldog Wrestling. L^ast
vear he had 5 national qualifiers,
and this season he anticipates more.
With a group of talented athletes as
well as competitive scholars. Coach
Wince noted that. "This is the hard-
est working group since I have been
a part of the program." .As their
ro\al domain is recognized, the
Bulldog Wrestlers may trulv be
called, "Kings of the mat."

Ernest
Blankenship jji
1927-1992 ^"^

Mr. Blankenship wrote often
about death, most recently about his

mother. He said that "the soul

reaches out" in times of distress "to

find hope again."

Death took Earnest quickly, quietly

— just as he was planning retirement

and just after a visit to his beloved

England, but, as he said of his

mother — he "led a simple life, and

trusted in The Lord."

We have never had among us a

man with as good a heart, a man as

kind in spirit, as Earnest

Blankenship. He is missed.

Gardner-Webb has represented man)' different things to its students and faculti, over the years. It is

Gardner-Webb who has stood for many things to many people in its Ufetime. It is the place where

romances blossom, Ufelong friendships are formed, and treasured memories are created. As

changes occur in each of us from experiences shared to lessons learned, Gardner-Webb has

experienced many changes diu-ing the years. Some of them have been quite spectacular. One of

the biggest changes has been the transformation from a college to a universitv- this year. The

additions of the Noel Hall and the Master's programs in Divinit)- make the progression from

college to imiversit) even more exciting.

Change is not always something we expect. This year brought two verv imexpected

changes, the loss of Mr. Enrest Blankenship and Dione AUen. Mr. Blankenship was an

extraordinan, teacher and friend to his students and colleagues. His caring nature is

evident in his poetrv'. Dione was a kind, gende person who was loved by everyone who

knew her. TTie loss of these two wonderful people changed the lives of mariy, but we

can say we are better people for having known them.

The caring facultv' and staff, smiling faces, and friendly heUos are what make

Gardner-Webb such a special place. Being a student here has taught me things that

I know I could not have learned anvwhere else. My professors and the friends I

have made play a larger role in my life. All of m\ professors have been great,

but I have to say a special thank you to a few of them.

Dr. Eastman, thank you for gi^'ing me that extra push to make me reach a

little higher and for encouraging me to do my best. Thank vou for leaving

your door open, especially dining those times when it seemed like I lived

outside of it.

Dr. Partin, thanks for listening and laughing with me.

Mr. Carscaddon, thanks for making me speak out in class like I do

outside of class. The two of you have influenced me to finish my

psycholog)' major, so you have not seen the last of me just yet.

Audrey, thank you for being there for me, belie\ing in me, and

filling in as "Mom" to all of the gang.

Last, but certainly not least. Dr. Stowe, thank you for sticking by

me and gi\ing me this chance. Working with vou has been a

pleasiu-e but, you may need a new answering machine next

year. I think I may have worn vours out.

The friendships I have biult will last a Ufetirrie. To the

gang, you are wonderful friends and terrific people. To

my roommates, thanks for being great roomies and

friends. J. Mark, I could not ask for a better best

friend. Thank you for standing by me through thick

and thin.

Gardner-Webb is a place that should be appreciated

for the fine education it provides and treasured

for the growing we do and the memories we

create. I hope you enjoy this yearbook and

remembering this year as much as I have

enjoyed working on it.
